SKY WIFI HUB, SKY PODS AND SKY WIFI APP: WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY WORK
After months of rumors , Sky's debut in fixed telephony is finally official . The announced Sky WiFi , the FTTH connectivity service based on the Open Fiber infrastructure and which will be activated in 120 Italian cities by the end of the summer , is already available for subscribers. techwadia
The offer is characterized not only by the 1 Gigabit
connection, but also by a series of devices that make it easy to access the
internet, as told by the CEO Maximo Ibarra, to offer customers the best
possible experience. So let's find out what the Sky WiFi Hub, the Sky Pods and
the Sky WiFi application are.

Sky WiFi Hub and Sky Pods
Let's start with Sky WiFi Hub , that is a modem-router that
includes eight antennas and that can work on the 2.4 or 5 GHz band. Sky WiFi
Hub is the cornerstone (defined "the brain" by Ibarra) of a more
complex , and just like a traditional modem router will have the task of
managing the connection. An interesting aspect is represented by the algorithm
on which it is based, which is able to process in real time the data of the
devices used in the home by the various members of the household, to always
ensure smooth navigation with the best possible signal.
On a technical level, Sky WiFi Hub supports the connection
of over 100 devicesat the same time and judging from what Ibarra said, it can
identify the most suitable frequency and the best WiFi channel according to
needs.
In terms of coverage, the official documentation published
on the Sky website states that the WiFi Hub ensures optimal coverage for homes
of up to 120 square meters. For larger spaces you need the Sky WiFi Pods.
The Sky Pod is the WiFi network extender that can amplify
the signal for larger homes. The design is very compact and in fact they almost
"hide" when connected to the mains, through the traditional plug. Sky
defines them as " more than just extenders ", since they can bring the
intelligence of the Sky WiFi Hub anywhere, through a mesh network. Still
referring to the official documentation, Sky points out that these are devices
designed for large or multi-storey homes.
From the technical specifications we read that for homes larger
than 120sqm, two WiFi Pods are required to obtain a powerful signal everywhere,
but others can also be added, all capable of configuring themselves.
Sky WiFi App
The third key element of the offer is the Sky WiFi
application, which allows you to manage the network in a simple and
personalized way, even remotely. Sky compared it to a real "remote
control" on a smartphone, to manage the connection, and in fact the
potential of this function is so many.
In fact, the Sky WiFi app allows you to create a profile for
each member of the household . Sky, based on its experience in the television
market, has also implemented a series of parental control options that will
allow parents to ensure that their children browse safely and that they avoid
coming into contact with content unsuitable for their age.
Also from the application it will be possible to pause the
WiFi and also to schedule the shutdown time for the devices associated with
each profile. In short, it will be a real service in its own right that will make
the connection even more customizable.
The profile management is interesting, especially for the
little ones: it is possible to decide the maximum time of use, set the
automatic goodnight by turning off the WiFi on the devices, but also to pause
the internet, to encourage socializing in the family. The app is already
available on the iOS App Store and Android's Google Play Store.
